Unsupersize Me!

August 1, 2016

Sometimes our kravings can be more than we can bear. Old habits of comfort food have rewired our brains with such force we might just need a “junk food rehab” to kick them. Sounds like a good idea actually.

Imagine going to a spa where the food is so good you almost forget your once constant companion now disguised as crumbs hidden in the dark recesses of your couch or favorite chair. Only your one-size- fits all very big guy pants and a gnawing feeling that something is missing can distract you from the re-programming designed to kick start your life toward junk food freedom.

Stop the Presses! They built it (back in 2014?!) and the people are flocking in. It is capitalism at its finest. Hey, I’m all for making a buck. But it seems a little conspiratorial to me. First the commercial food industry pushes their garbage to the masses who then get sick, Big Pharma is there and quickly swoops in with a name for the “dis-ease.” Since when is obesity an illness? Ever since they mixed up some toxic chemicals, called it medicine and covered it with an insurance plan. Hmm, another conspiracy?

I recently read about a woman who went to one of the first rehabs for sugar addicts. She said “Little Debbie” was her best friend. Seems sugar is no different in the brain (and body) than harmful illegal drugs. And guess what, all processed foods contain sugar! There are over 60 names for sugar now. Those Doritos you crave, your favorite spaghetti sauce, bread, yogurt, yep, full of sugar. Not just any sugar either the really bad stuff like high fructose corn syrup and other sugars they don't have to put on the label.

Seems junk food kravings are just sugar cravings in disguise. Or are they? And the addiction? That’s only the half of it. But we won’t go there. We’ll save that for another time.

Looking for real food? If you’re in the US, you can check out the USDA’s site of local food listings.

Unsupersizing just got a whole new look, and it’s not about exercise. (Although moving your body is a good thing.)
